What FCAT grades mean

The state of Florida annually grades public schools for student performance. The grades are based on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores in reading, math, writing and science. The grading formula includes not only whether students are meeting high standards, but how much they have improved. It also puts a premium on improving the math and reading performance of the bottom 25 percent of students.

Schools that receive “A”s, or improve at least one letter grade, receive “school recognition money” equal to $75 per student. School advisory councils decide how to divvy up the money, but it’s usually converted into bonuses for teachers and other employees.
