Hurricane Matthew’s howling wind and driving rain pummeled Florida’s coastline and has proven to be a ruinous, days-long event. The northeast coast is feeling the brunt of the storm’s destructive lashings. Sea surges were forecast to reach between 7 and 11 feet and the city was under a flood warning as rainwater poured into St. John's River in the afternoon. More than 1 million utility customers were without power. More than 22,000 people rode out the storm in 147 shelters in 33 counties.
The photo narrative here is within the collection of images documented by our photojournalists. They represent the most compelling look at what is unfolding before their own eyes.
