We found 827 people shot by police in Florida. Here’s how to browse our database.

The Tampa Bay Times compiled data on every Florida police shooting from 2009 to 2014 and tracked more than 30 different details about the 772 incidents in which 827 people were shot.

We looked at specific situations that showed up in multiple shootings.

A few common patterns emerged.

Of the 827 people shot, more than 1 in 5 failed to follow orders from an officer.

More than 1 in 4 were fleeing a crime scene.

And more than 1 in 4 pointed a weapon at an officer.

One of the most common details: 246 people shot showed signs of mental instability.

Other details were more rare.

Twenty people were shot after injuring an officer with a vehicle.

Thirteen people were shot after answering the door while holding a gun.

Seven were shot after killing an officer.

And 18 innocent bystanders were hit by gunshots aimed at someone else.

Lawsuits were filed in 91 of the 772 cases.

We looked at where people were shot.

Seventy-three shootings happened in Miami, more than any other city.

Fifty-six in Orlando. Fifty-five in Jacksonville.

Twenty-eight in Tampa. Twenty in St. Petersburg.

We looked at the people who were shot.

Most were men. Only six percent were women.

The breakdown by race: Black 41 percent. White 40 percent. Hispanic 15 percent. Asian less than half a percent.

Most of the people shot, 52.5 percent, were killed.

More than one person was shot in just 46 cases. In the most deadly case, four people were killed, including a confidential informant during an undercover sting.

We looked at how many people were armed.

Most had some sort of weapon: 650 of 827.

Police said 390 had a firearm.

Eighty-one had a blade or stabbing implement.

Thirty-seven had a BB or pellet gun.

Ten had a blunt weapon like a baseball bat.

Five had a toy weapon.

Four got the officer’s Taser.

We looked at the officers and their agencies

Like the people shot, the officers that shot them were mostly men. Only 49 of 1,350 officers who shot someone were women.

Only three cases involved a female cop shooting a woman.

Sixty-five percent of the officers were white. Twenty percent were hispanic. Only seven percent were black. One percent were Asian. Two were Native American. The race of 66 officers was undisclosed.

Which agency had the most incidents?

The Miami-Dade Police Department with 75. Seven of those were fatal shootings of black men, all within eight months and they prompted a civil rights investigation by the Department of Justice.

Most officers were involved in only one shooting in our data. Seventy-five were involved in two.

Ten were involved in three.

We included every case of an officer shooting someone with a firearm, so we found some unexpected cases — like officers shooting each other by accident.
