April 20, 2011 — Orlando

Jerry Cardin's wife called authorities because he was damaging their home and threatening to kill himself.

Orange County deputies said that before they were able to speak with Cardin, he emerged from the house with a long-barreled gun and took aim at them. Deputies Luis Irizarry, Eric Rivera and Eric Shellenberger responded by shooting Cardin an undisclosed number of times in the torso, according to reports.

He was sentenced to three years in prison.

An investigation determined that the deputies were justified in shooting Cardin.

This was the 38th police shooting in Florida in 2011.
