Nov. 23, 2013 — Belle Glade

A security guard at an apartment complex called authorities after Lance Joseph, 25, flashed a gun.

Deputies Charles Booth and Corey Oliver spotted Joseph's grey Toyota around 6 p.m. and followed it until he pulled in front of a residence. The deputies drove past in their unmarked Jeep Cherokee to get his tag number, turned around and were coming back when they say Joseph got out of the Camry and fired at them.

They returned fire, wounding him twice. He drove away but crashed into an apartment building. Joseph said that he thought he was being followed by a man he believed wanted to harm him and that he fired into the air to frighten the people in the car. The deputies said that they yelled out the car windows identifying themselves. Their vehicle was not hit by any rounds despite the fact that Joseph emptied his gun, according to the Sheriff's office.

This was the 124th police shooting in Florida in 2013.

Three days earlier, two officers shot one person in San Mateo .
