March 31, 2010 — Lakeland

Lakeland police were called to the hospital to interview a woman who had been stabbed.

The woman at first was reluctant to say who stabbed her, but finally gave police permission to search her home.

Two officers, Phil Smith and Ted Sealy, tried to summon someone in the house. Hearing no response, they broke in and proceeded to search the home. Read more

Smith found Albert Davis, 27, inside a closet holding a knife. Both officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, which he did.

When police asked Davis to come out of the closet, the deputies say he ducked to pick up the knife. Smith fired three times, killing Davis.

There were some conflicting statements from the officers.

This was the 24th police shooting in Florida in 2010.
