Dec. 30, 2010 — Pembroke Pines

The mother of John McCully called the police in response to her son's aggressive behavior.

McCully, 24, had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and his mother said he had not been taking his medication and may have been drinking.

Officials said three officers entered the house with the mother's permission and found McCully looking through a kitchen drawer from which he pulled a butcher knife. Read more

Police ordered him to drop it and eventually hit him with Tasers but they didn't work. McCully ran out of the kitchen and charged at Officer Gavin Smith, who shot him once in the chest. McCully was taken to the hospital, where he died.

This was the 110th police shooting in Florida in 2010.
