April 19, 2009 — Miami Gardens

Police responded to a report of a man exposing himself and masturbating about 2:30 p.m.

Detective John Jones pulled over a Ford Expedition that matched the description of what the man was driving. Jones said 42-year-old Marvin Kitnurse, a registered sex offender, was initially cooperative but then reached for something on the floor of the SUV.

Johns ordered Kitnurse out of the vehicle and was patting him down when Kitnurse shoved him and tried to get back into the SUV. The two struggled and when the detective pulled Kitnurse out of the vehicle he had grabbed a handgun from the floor. Read more

Kitnurse stumbled around the front of the SUV. He turned and raised his weapon, police said, and Johns and Officer Vivian Louis opened fire, wounding him.

Kitnurse was sentenced to three years in prison.

This was the 48th police shooting in Florida in 2009.

One day earlier, four officers shot two people in Pembroke Park .

Two days later, four officers shot one person in Fort Lauderdale .
