Jan. 14, 2014 — Fort Pierce

St. Lucie County sheriff's deputies responded to a call near 3:30 p.m. about loud music coming from a garage across the street from an elementary school.

The deputies got no answer when they knocked on the front door and garage door. According to the sheriff's office, the garage door suddenly opened and Officer Christopher Newman saw Gregory Hill, 30, inside with a gun in his hand and he raised it toward Deputy Edward Lopez.

The deputies retreated and a SWAT team responded, later sending tear gas into the house. But after no activity for several hours, a robot found Hill, a father who was planning to marry his fiance in the coming months, dead inside from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators found a gun in Hill's pocket. It was not loaded. Newman was cleared by a grand jury in the shooting.

This was the seventh police shooting in Florida in 2014.

Three days earlier, three officers shot one person in Miami Gardens .

Six days later, one officer shot one person in Interlachen .
