July 21, 2011 — North Miami Beach

Jonathan Woolfson, 37, shot and killed a friend who came to help him at his North Miami Beach townhouse.

Woolfson was "distraught" and acting "erratically," according to police, and his family asked Troy Longhurst, 29, to check on him. Neighbors heard gunshots at about 9:15 p.m. and phoned 911.

Woolfson barricaded himself in the bathroom. After a tense SWAT standoff, Woolfson emerged with his hand behind his back, authorities said. During the confrontation, Officers Juan Ruiz and Aldo Alfonso, and Sergeants Jason Ochoa and Juan Jurado fatally shot him. Woolfson's hand was empty. Read more
