Oct. 22, 2013 — North Port

James Duttman, 57, was sitting alone in his white van on a remote section of North Blade Boulevard.

As Officer Aaron Nick approached around 10:48 p.m., Duttman opened the driver's door, forcing Nick to back up. He pointed a .38-caliber handgun at the officer and refused commands to drop the weapon.

Officer Nick fired twice, killing him. North Port police had encountered Duttman four times in May. Each time he was drunk and depressed, and had asked police to shoot him.

In late May, he went through a Baker Act mental evaluation. At the time of his death, Duttman had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit.

The police cruiser's dash cam captured most of the incident.

This was the 109th police shooting in Florida in 2013.

The same day, one officer shot one person in Hialeah .

Three days later, one officer shot one person in St. Petersburg .
