Aug. 14, 2012 — Miami

Detectives went to a pawn shop in Liberty City to investigate stolen goods.

They spoke to 40-year-old Charles Collins. When asked for his I.D., Collins said it was in his car and was escorted to retrieve it. Once in the car, he refused to get out.

Police and witnesses said he put his Volkswagen GTI into reverse and accelerated toward detectives. One detective suffered a broken elbow. Detective Guillermo Delgado opened fire. Collins was pronounced dead at the hospital. Read more

Passenger Jennie DeGeorge, 27, was not hurt but taken into custody on a probation violation. The GTI was stolen. DeGeorge was later convicted of grand theft.

This was the 89th police shooting in Florida in 2012.

Five days earlier, one officer shot one person in Homestead .

Seven days later, one officer shot one person in Pensacola .
