Feb. 3, 2009 — North Miami

Officers stopped a BMW which had been reported stolen in West Palm Beach months earlier.

As Sgt. Ernesto Moreira approached the car, police said that Brian Copeland, 21, accelerated toward the officer.

Copeland, in turn, swerved and hit the sergeant's cruiser. He ran from the car and was captured nearby.

A passenger told police that Copeland had said that he did not want to go back to jail.

He was on probation for a marijuana charge and had been in jail for theft.

He was sentenced to nearly three years in prison.

This was the 13th police shooting in Florida in 2009.

The same day, one officer shot one person in Starke .

One day later, one officer shot two people in Hollywood .
