July 25, 2011 — Palm Harbor

About 1:30 a.m., July 25, a deputy spotted a car driving erratically near the Shoppes at Boot Ranch. Bradley Gaus pulled over into the parking lot, near Publix.

Both men got out of their cars. Gaus, 26, had a machete in his right hand and as he raised it over his head, he moved toward Sgt. Christopher Metro.

Metro retreated, circling around his cruiser. Gaus followed, yelling that the deputy would have to shoot him. Read more

Metro fired, wounding Gaus three times in the torso. Susan Gaus had called authorities July 23 to report her husband missing and that she believed that he was suicidal.

This was the 75th police shooting in Florida in 2011.

Four days earlier, four officers shot one person in Orlando .

11 days later, four officers shot one person in Cape Canaveral .
