May 2, 2012 — Hollywood

Deputies stopped to investigate what they thought was a drug sale between two men in a car. The men drove away at first, but were quickly stopped nearby.

As the deputies approached the car, Fred Funchess, 26, revved its engine and accelerated toward Deputy Nicholas Masters, officials said.

Masters fired four shots at the car, hitting Funchess in the abdomen. Passenger Ken Cadet, 24, was not injured. Read more

Funchess was sentenced to five years in prison for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and five years for fleeing a law enforcement officer.

This was the 45th police shooting in Florida in 2012.

Three days earlier, one officer shot one person in St. Petersburg .

Seven days later, one officer shot one person in Fort Myers .
