July 8, 2010 — Arcadia

Jason Todd Brown, 26, was shot and killed by Desoto County Sheriff's Sgt. Bill Bevis during a physical altercation in a secluded wooded area in Arcadia.

Bevis was investigating the theft of a four-wheeler. Brown also had several active felony warrants.

According to authorities, Brown knocked Sgt. Bevis to the ground, punched him in the face repeatedly and struggled with him to get his duty weapon. Read more

Bevis was able to get his weapon from its holster and fired one shot into Brown's throat area. Brown was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Desoto Memorial Hospital.

Bevis was released from the same hospital after being treated for a fractured nose and receiving several stitches to close the laceration near his left eye.

After a review of the incident, the State Attorney's Office of the 12th Judicial Circuit cleared Bevis.

This was the 51st police shooting in Florida in 2010.

Three days earlier, one officer shot one person in Miami .

Five days later, one officer shot one person in Orlando .
