Nov. 13, 2009 — Key Biscayne

While conducting a training exercise, Officer Alfredo Alvarez hit Recruit Trainee Jonathon John with pellets from a live buckshot round.

Alvarez, an instructor at the police academy, was playing the role of an armed suspect firing into a patrol car. His shotgun was subsequently found to have been loaded with one live round and two blanks.

John suffered a broken clavicle from one pellet and another pellet lodged in the skin between his eyes. He had on a bullet-proof vest. Read more
