Aug. 1, 2009 — Miami

Iran Delima, 39, who was mentally ill, armed himself with a handgun and began banging on the door of a tenant who lived beside him in an apartment in Miami.

The tenant called police, who responded and tried to get Delima to come out of the apartment and put the gun down. After a 30-minute standoff, Delima cut a screen out of a bathroom window and stuck his gun out, pointing it at Officer Juan Besu.

Delima recovered from his injuries and was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

He served nearly three years in prison before being released.

This was the 83rd police shooting in Florida in 2009.
