Jan. 8, 2011 — Madison

A sheriff's deputy and a state trooper approached a tent pitched in a drainage ditch by I-10.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Deputy David Myers ordered a transient man named Rudy G. Taylor, 50, out of the tent.

Taylor opened the flap and began to exit with a shotgun pointed in Myers' direction. Florida Highway Patrol Trooper John Sleigher shouted "Gun," drew his weapon and fired. Myers also began firing and fell down. The two fired 17 times into the tent and struck Taylor nine times and killed him. Read more

Both officers were cleared by a grand jury and Sleigher was awarded a medal of valor by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Rudy Taylor's mother, Martha, said her son, an Army veteran, was not a transient and had been camped there for just one night, on his way out west to look for work.

This was the third police shooting in Florida in 2011.

Two days earlier, one officer shot one person in Fort Lauderdale .

Four days later, one officer shot one person in Boynton Beach .
