Police responded to a home around 10 p.m. after reports of shots fired.

Adrein Herrera, 30, barricaded himself in the home and took several shots at police. A SWAT team entered around 4 p.m. and Herrera fired at them, police said. Officers German Alech, Alain Cruz and Roberto de la Nuez returned fire, killing him.

Officers found Herrera's 70-year-old mother, Dinacela Herrera, dead from a gunshot wound. Police did not have a motive for her shooting. In 2007, his mother had petitioned the courts to evaluate her son's mental condition under Florida's Baker Act. Read more
