May 10, 2014 — Pensacola

Kenneth Roan, 51, allegedly stabbed a man outside a Tractor Supply Store and took his vehicle.

Deputies pursued Roan to a parking lot, where Deputy Michael Carter approached his vehicle on foot. Carter said that Roan sped away, nearly hitting him. Roan eventually crashed into a SUV on Highway 29. Carter again approached. He said that Roan disobeyed orders, instead reaching into the back seat and under the driver's seat. Believing that Roan was searching for a weapon, Deputy Carter fired two or three times, hitting him in the shoulder.

No weapon was found but the State Attorney's Office felt that Roan's actions could reasonably be interpreted as reaching for a weapon. Read more
