Oct. 28, 2013 — Tampa

Tampa airport police noticed a suspicious man parked in the short-term parking garage.

Checking his ID, Officer Jason Virt learned that Allen Piano, 46, was on probation for providing obscene materials to a minor. Police learned that Piano had left Pinellas County without permission and a warrant was being requested for his arrest.

Officer Virt found Piano's blue Thunderbird again around 5 p.m., now on the fourth floor of the long-term parking facility. As he approached, Virt saw that Piano had a shotgun pointed into his mouth. Read more

Piano jumped out of the car and lunged toward Virt, who fired four times. One shot struck Piano, who then jumped over the concrete wall and landed head first at the exit of the rental car facility below.

His injuries from the fall were fatal. State Attorney Mark Ober deemed Virt's use of force justified.

This was the 116th police shooting in Florida in 2013.
