May 14, 2013 — Brandon

Detective Jack Thompson was questioning Bobby Earl Driggers, who was wanted in an auto theft, at around 1:15 p.m.

According to the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office, Driggers, 50, suddenly grabbed for the deputy's gun and the two struggled.

Driggers had pulled off Thompson's holster and was removing his gun when Deputy Manuel Gonzalez arrived as backup. Read more

Thompson yelled, “Shoot him, he has my gun.” Gonzalez fired one shot, hitting Driggers in the back. Driggers died at the hospital.

This was the 56th police shooting in Florida in 2013.

Six days earlier, one officer shot one person in Royal Palm Beach .

One day later, one officer shot one person in Fort Walton Beach .
