Nov. 22, 2011 — Lakeland

Off-duty police Officer Preston Chatmon arrived home and found two men standing in his living room with his flat-screen TV in their hands.

Chatmon, who had drawn his service weapon, identified himself as a police officer.

He struck Nelson Rodriguez, 33, with the butt of his gun as Rodriguez muscled past him out the door. He fired at Anthony Santiago, 18, whom he said moved toward him with something in his hand. Read more

Santiago, shot in the thigh, also ran out the door. Chatmon chased both men, eventually catching them and holding them until backup arrived.

Rodriguez is Santiago’s stepfather.

This was the 119th police shooting in Florida in 2011.

The same day, three officers shot one person in Hialeah .

Five days later, one officer shot one person in Dania Beach .
