March 19, 2012 — Jacksonville

About 6 p.m., four officers responded to a report of shots fired during an argument between two men at the Emerson Inn.

One of the men, Eric Sanchez, 28, was on a balcony. He looked down at Officer Matt Edwards, lifted his shirt and started to pull a handgun from his waistband, officials said. When Sanchez refused commands to drop the gun, Edwards fired five times, wounding Sanchez in the chest and arm.

Sanchez, who had a criminal record, had just been released from jail on a petty theft charge. Read more

Edwards was cleared by a Sheriff's Office inquiry.

As a habitual offender, Sanchez was sentenced to 22 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

This was the 28th police shooting in Florida in 2012.

Three days earlier, two officers shot one person in Miramar .

Four days later, one officer shot one person in Fort Myers .
