July 18, 2013 — Pembroke Pines

Sheriff's detectives learned from an informant that Andrew Thomas planned to rob an Allstate insurance office.

They cleared out the office, secured surrounding businesses in the Palm Square shopping center and waited. Thomas, 23, showed up at 3 p.m., armed and wearing a mask. Deputies said that he disobeyed orders.

At some point, they felt threatened and Detectives Gerardo Lopez, Carlos Gomez and Jason Rotella opened fire, killing him. Read more
